Bitter Fictions is the project of Devin Friesen, a guitarist/writer from Calgary, AB. On this debut LP, Bitter Fictions presents solo guitar in extended practice: alternate tunings, controlled feedback manipulations, drone building, live looping, improvisation—these are all elements to the whole, as Friesen layers scraps of feedback, melodies, and pure texture into blossoming sound narratives. Think “post-rock” (in the “rock instruments used in non-rock ways” vein, not faux-cinematic crescendo nonsense) as interpreted by the likes of say, Alan Licht, Roy Montgomery, or Thurston Moore, and you’re maybe starting to get there.

"[...] a stunning eight-track, 42-minute guitar opus, complete with ethereal ambience, warm washes of droning fuzz and the occasional stab of piercing feedback. For his first complete effort, he’s succeeded in presenting a rich, fully formed tableau."
-Josiah Hughes, FFWD Weekly

"[...] roams from Thurston-y guitar stunt-work to Birchville Cat Motel sunburnt drone to Oren Ambarchi’s electro-acoustic pitter-patter to the slow, haunting expanse of late-period Earth. Even some finger-picking in there, too. Bitter Fictions kinda goes to every place a modern solo “experimental” guitar record can go, but it hops around without seeming jittery or uncomfortable. More like one guy (in this case, Devin Friesen) just working out a series of interesting compositions and letting the chips fall where they may. To quote Borat: ‘very nice!’”
-M.K., Yellow Green Red

"[...] takes listeners on an experimental and psychedelic journey into the depths of drone and pedal-focused guitar music. [...] a great listen and perfect music to accompany long introspective nights or headphone journeys while walking through the city.
"

-Evangelos Typist, The Gauntlet
