NNA062: Jason Lescalleet “Archaic Architecture”c40

“Archaic Architecture” is the latest work from Jason Lescalleet, one of New England’s most talented and dedicated modern sound artists. Over the past couple of decades, Lescalleet has released highly-regarded and quality works on labels such as Kye, RRR, Erstwhile, Chondritic Sound, and most recently on his own Glistening Examples imprint, as well as collaborating with like-minded explorers of sound such as Aaron Dilloway, Graham Lambkin, and Joe Colley. On this new full-length cassette, Lescalleet turns his ear toward extended, hypnotic melody, combining it with his own personal variety of tape-damaged concréte noise. On “An Archaic Code”, overlapping sheets of lush choral organ and synthesizer meld into each other, rising and falling in consequence, sweeping and pulsing through all fields of frequency. Blanketed underneath is a subdued, purring storm of crumpled tape collage, where found sounds, microscopic textures, and incidental debris delicately scratch at the melody above with coarse piano shards. With his primitive electronics and careful pacing, Lescalleet is able to inject an incredible amount of active detail and depth into a seemingly minimal body. “Organ Music #3” is a hand-played piece of deep and lush organ chords, gothic and powerful in their magnitude. Shifting back and forth between light and dark, the melodies fall into an emotive purgatory, with a consequential production of unusual overtones can feel both strangely disorienting and holy at the same time. The sound has a bold and tangible warmth via tape saturation, built with what seems like the amplified air of a cathedral-like space, making for a raw and enveloping listening experience.

You have to picture the workshop of noise dad/sound artist Jason Lescalleet, tucked in the middle of the Maine woods, loaded with old-fangled gadgets. He pitchshifts some hip hop, it's heard only by the surrounding trees. Live, he channels the ghost of Maryanne Amacher and is liable to molecularly distend Eminem. His recorded work isn't that much different sonically, but sitting down to listen to something like "Archaic Code" on headphones shifts the emphasis from immersion to inner experience, giving you the chance to notice little static sounds and whatnot. Lescalleet's coming tape on NNA is his second this year, following Chronditic Sound's release of the infinitesimally fragile Il Turista. - Aug. 20, 2013 by Mike Sugarman

The chem trails have seeped in when clouds cross in the sky, the landscape and sunset smear, and dark tears streak cheeks. Wiping at one, in a blur, but it doesn’t help the feeling of being simply upset. So, relax. Have a seat on this here log and enjoy these moments as they blissfully waste life. Not that this is death, no, but that time in every person’s life for rejuvenation. Thy mind weeps with colors, while juicing, flooding, and numbing all perception as a whole; one-being of thinking. Everyone is calm. Nobody complains anymore. Mind-poison is “An Archaic Code” to a consensus solution.

And everyone associates poison with something bad. Let’s take a step back here and find point A within point B. The Archaic Architecture, if you will. What makes this poison create cooperation? From what plant or from under what rock was this poison extracted? Does it populate the natural state of most everything inhuman? This is real. This is in our minds and sounds and matter. This feels venomous, but important. Like being drunk, only awhile afloat, so physics don’t matter. Thus, this log upon you is post-nature. Human is the soil now. Root all that is perpetual into the mind. Become the world’s key to… “Yo, that’s my boiii Jason Lescallet. Aye, Jason!? Toby and Matt poppin your new c40 today, yeah? That’s so ill, my dude! “ -By C MONSTER on Aug 20 2013

Dummy Mag:

Music that invites the ear to listen is a whole lot rarer that you'd think. It's only in spending a little time - 20 satisfying minutes to be precise - with Maine-based sound artist Jason Lescalleet's new release for ever-excellent cassette label NNA Tapes that this thought is free to bubble up in my head. There is so much out there that screams to be heard - compressed to within an inch of its life, waves inflated to oppressive levels - that the value of a slow, quiet moment has eroded. It's just surface damage, though - bother to test your attention span with the tape's A-side An Archaic Code (listen on the left) and you'll be rewarded. Texturally and contextually, there is nothing too revolutionary going on here for fans of found sound spiked ambience but that is beside the point. The revolution's in your head if you want it. -Published: 20/08/13
