Matthew Read (Family Studies, Castle Excellent and CoJA) and John Brennan (Destroy Vancouver, Psychic Tuberculosis) join forces in an excellent Sax and Drum showcase, displaying unusual melodic and rhythmic impulses. The two improvise comfortably together, never pushing a piece into tonal oblivion. Instead, they explore the textural possibilities of their instruments, paying close attention to the spaces between the notes. The recording is crystal clear and brilliantly sequenced allowing moments of fluttery notes to contrast the more aggressive, but buttery rich tenor blasts nicely.

Devin Friesen (FFWD Magazine) Says:

For the last tape in the newest USSR batch, we go to Vancouver to meet Mold Grows onBaby, the duo of Matthew Read (tenor sax) and John Brennan (drums). The playing here is generally more restrained than on the other releases listed here, leaning more towards space and texture than free jazz dissonance — not to say this tape isn’t without teeth, but this is one where the spaces between notes are just as important as the rolling blasts. The range is mostly between fluttery melodic runs and playful skronk, sitting nicely alongside the more guitar-oriented releases in spirit, if not in instrumentation. The clean recording also lends a sense of depth to these improvisations, especially on the drums, which often sound cavernously deep.
