ALBUM STREAM: PLAINS – STONE CLOUD

POSTED BY LIZ PAVLOVIC ON MARCH 18, 2014

Alabama-based labels Happenin Records and Noumenal Loom have teamed up to release garage rocker Plains‘ latest album, Stone Cloud, on cassette. The third full-length release (and second physical release) from Travis Swinford, Stone Cloud is an eleven-track long excursion through varying degrees of DIY bedroom-pop and jangly, feel-good psych rock. Swinford’s vocals could at times be a dead ringer for Lou Reed’s, and when they’re surrounded by hypnotic organ and pulsing tambourine, such as on the track “Most People”, one could almost swear they were listening to a new Velvet Underground track. It’s not pure 60s-inspired psych, though; his song “Jessica” has a uniquely slanted, bluesy edge with drums that seem to grow increasingly desperate as Swinford continues to sing “Jessica, Jessica, Jessica”, and a few of the other tracks have a bit of old-school country swagger (think Johnny Cash) that reminds the listener of Plains’ southern roots. Check out the music video for “Jessica” above; it was filmed by Swinford and Corey Higgins and features a lonesome guy wandering around an Alabama town in a polo, khakis, and skeleton mask. Is he looking for Jessica? Waiting for her on that park bench? Thinking about her while he watches the sunset? We may never know exactly, but I hope he finds whatever he’s searching for. Stone Cloud is available on tape starting tomorrow — in the meantime, you can jam out to a full album stream below.
