NNA022: Three Legged Race “Raining Order” c20

Hair Police member Robert Beatty produces two pieces of lush, womb-like synthesizer melded with hypnotic processed female voice. Highly intricate and textured electronics weave in and out of gelatinous loops of speech with expert precision. Artwork by the artist.

Boomkat:

**c20, colour j-card with colour insert** "Hair Police member Robert Beatty produces two pieces of lush, womb-like synthesizer melded with hypnotic processed female voice. Highly intricate and textured electronics weave in and out of gelatinous loops of speech with expert precision. Artwork by the artist." Obviously, this is nowhere near as gnarled as Hair Police. In somnambulant mood, Beatty lulls us into a softly glowing, fleshy world of 'Raining Order', textured surfaces glistening with micro-tonal harmonics while a lone lady (Ainsley Wagoner) beckons from the distance, ushering us closer to the core, which just happens to be a tape loop playing in a cold, hollow, windowless room. After this realisation 'Raining Whisper' takes a darker form, scuttling micro-organisms scurry down the ear canal and wraithe-like shapes flit through the airspace, seemingly sensitive to vibrations so we remain quieter, more still so as not to alert them to our presence. Vividly affecting sounds. Recommended!!!

Foxy Digitalis:

Robert Beatty of Hair Police returns with another offering under his Three Legged Race alias that is quite subtle, but very evocative at the same time.  This twenty-minute cassette offers up two excellent side-long tracks that are as beautiful as they are melancholy.  (The fact that both song titles contain the word “raining” certainly helps in reinforcing this duality on a certain level.)  At any rate, the two tracks on this cassette come together to form one great release that’s worth getting lost in for a while.

The two pieces, “Raining Order” and “Raining Whisper,” both revolve around ambient synth chords and effects paired with the disembodied, repeating sound of woman’s voice.  Even with their similar elements, each piece inhabits a different sonic sphere.  Listening to “Raining Order,” for example, is something like hearing the surrounding noises while hiding in the corner of a cathedral.  The slow, organ-like tones and the echoing quality of the voice really drive home this feeling.  On the other hand, “Raining Whisper” has a much more outer-space quality to it as synths click and grate.  For this track, the voice recording sounds like a lost radio transmission coming in from another solar system, adding to the interplanetary experience.

No matter what images this music produces in your mind, it’s hard to deny that it sounds great the whole way through. “Raining Order” is definitely a tape that’s worth checking out.
